R A MILLER (1912-2006)

I'm a big fan of the late Georgia artist, (R.A.) Reuben Aaron Miller.  Never had the chance to meet him, but I have picked up a few of his pieces over the years.  I want to share with you a few stock photos that I've found on the internet to give you and idea of his humor and his wonderful very primitive art.

Devils and Blow Oskars were a couple of his favorite subjects.   Blow Oskar as it goes was a family member who used to honk his horn whenever he drove past.

Whirligigs were all over his property.  If you go way back and look at some of R.E.M's early videos you'll see glimpses of R.A.'s whirligigs and even Mr. Miller himself.

 The great thing about R.A. Miller's art is that it is still affordable.  Check out Slotin Folk Art Auction they always have a few of his pieces.  I see them on Ebay a lot too.  We also have a few of his works left at Dos Folkies Gallery.  www.dosfolkies.com.  Check them out if you have a chance.

I have an R.A. Miller flag in my collection similar to the one above. After 9/11 T.V. Guide did four different covers featuring American Flags by four different artists.  One of the covers featured one of Mr. Miller's flags.

wow, 2014

Hey folks, it's been a long busy year.  Long year but fast passing.  I've been certified as an in home care giver.  It started when my friend and artist, Craig Rogers shattered his ankle back in February.  I was hired by his mom to help take care of him and it eventually evolved into me becoming an certified care giver.  So, where have the blogs been all year?  Well, things got a little put on hold as I took care of Craig, as well as my 86 year old father and helped my daughter get rolling in college and establish herself up in Bellingham  Washington. I also did some kayaking with my wife and had a great backpacking trip in Washington's Northern Cascades.  So I apologize for the lack of blogs this year.  But, as an art lover until the end my passion for all things raw, outsider and brut has not diminished.  Please be patient and we will have more entries real soon.  In the mean time, here's an example of my friend Craig Rogers' art.  If you are interested in anything you see please contact me through the Dos Folkies Gallery website.   Cheers, Dave

Back from last year.

  

Hey folks.  Well, survived the last year, and the holidays, and a knock down chest cold.  But, back to celebrate the art we love. Here's a piece I picked up back in December by John Henry Toney.  It's called, Jonah and the Whale.  You can see Jonah's legs poking out of the whale's mouth.  I'll be adding it to Dos Folkies Gallery website very soon. Mr John Henry Toney

Here's some great photos Jenell  took of Alabama artist, John Henry Toney when she was traveling through Alabama back in June of 2013.  Mr. Toney lives in Seale, Alabama on Butch Anthony's farm. John keeps a small cabin there where he is free to create his drawings and visit with art patrons who flow in and out of Butch's farm.  The drawings in the photographs are available at Dos Folkies Gallery.

William Hawkins - Artist 1895-1990

Summer is an active time here, family events, dog walking, trail hiking and garden tending taking up a large part of it. On top of that we've been hit with a heat wave here on the Olympic Peninsula.  Yet, art is always on the mind.  William Hawkins is an artist I've been aware of for awhile, but this summer I've been finding out more about him and looking at his art wherever I can find it.  I just discovered today that as well as his paintings there were several pencil drawings in his body of works, which was around 500 pieces.

Williams Hawkins was born in Kentucky in 1895, moved to Columbus Ohio in 1916, and spent most of his adult life there. He served with the army in France during WWI working as a grave digger. He did paint in the 1930's but did not take up art full time until 1979. He painted on large pieces of plywood and masonite as well as creating the pencil drawings.  There are said to be lost works from his earlier years of painting too. 

SNAKE AND EAGLE

He was discovered by another artist by the name of Lee Garrett who helped him enter one of his pieces in Ohio State Fair where it won 1st place in the amateur level. The rest is history. Williams Hawkins is one of the the most highly collected outsiders.  One of his paintings recently sold in auction for $70,000.  Don't expect to see him on our little gallery anytime soon.  But take a look at his art on line and there's also a short documentary about him at, http://foundationstart.org/artists/william-hawkins/
